Organization Information

Scope of our organizational ministry:
- Compass Aviation is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. We are essentially a ‘residency program’ for future missionary pilot/mechanics. It is both a maintenance facility and flight training facility for individuals who have their A&P mechanic’s license and at least a Private Pilot’s license, and are seeking to further their experience and thus meet the requirements set by other sending organizations.

Countries where we serve:
- USA.

Countries in which previous candidates or aircraft are serving:
- Papua New Guinea, Madagascar, Honduras, and in the state of Alaska.

Mission Statement:
- Compass Aviation exists to provide future missionary pilot/mechanics with aviation experience in a facility where they can gain the flight hours and maintenance proficiency required by mission organizations.

Core Values:
- Strong Christian faith
- Willingness to learn
- Flexibility
- Dedication to excellence

Flight Training Info

Type of flight training that we offer as part of our standard training curriculum:
- Compass tailors flight training to meet the needs of individual candidates. Typically a pilot will begin at Compass with at least a Private Pilot’s certificate, and it is our goal to provide them with all the requirements of the organization of their choice.

Scope of our training:
- Our goal is to provide flight hours in a SEL aircraft up to the required amount set by a mission organization. A portion of this may be obtained at no cost to the candidate in flights associated with the maintenance facility (eg. aircraft delivery or as a ‘chase pilot’ after an annual inspection).

- Additional training typically includes instrument and commercial (if not already obtained), and high performance time in order to meet the requirements of the organization (often 50 hrs). This high performance time consists of specialized preparation for the mission field, including low-level cross-countries, mountain flying, and a multitude of takeoffs and landings at unimproved airstrips.

- If appropriately rated as a CFI, flight hours may be obtained by providing instruction.

How many flight hours of training do you typically provide:
- Compass’ goal is to help candidates meet the requirements set by mission aviation organizations such as MAF, JAARS, and NTMA. The flight hours required vary between organizations, but are typically between 300 and 500 flight hours.

Type of training:
- Free accumulation of flight time delivering aircraft to/from customers or as a ‘chase pilot’ prior to or following maintenance (limited number of hours).
-Affordable rental of aircraft for specialized training (eg. Instrument, High Performance/Complex, Commercial, etc.).
- Availability of aircraft for CFI’s to provide training to others.

Type of aircraft used for training:
- Cessna 172
- Cessna 206

Maintenance Training Info

Scope of your training:
- Candidates entering Compass Aviation are expected to have their A&P mechanic’s license. Exceptions can be made for those still pursuing an A&P, but preferably with previous maintenance experience.

- Candidates are expected to first learn the basic service items on an aircraft, and then work up to larger and more complex projects, until the candidate is qualified to obtain an Inspection Authorization, if so desired.

- Candidates will gain experience on a wide variety of light General Aviation planes, including Single-Engine Cessnas, Beechcraft, and Pipers, as well as various cabin-class twins.

Length of training offered:
- A&P mechanics should expect between 1 and 3 years, depending on experience. Mechanics still pursuing an A&P should expect 3 or more years. Mechanics desiring an IA should expect at least 3 years.

Type of training:
- On-the-job training is obtained throughout a candidate’s time at Compass Aviation, ranging from step-by-step walkthroughs for the less-experienced, to guidance and accountability for the more-experienced. All training is one-on-one and hands-on, tailored for the individual needs of the candidate.
